Each year the Rogue Valley Piecemakers creates an Opportunity Quilt and offers an "Opportunity" to win it by raffle.
About the Quilt:
The creator and piecemaker of the quilt is one of our members Cathy Baisley from San Antonio, Texas. Cathy began her quilting journey during chemotherapy treatments for Breast cancer in 1997. At the hospital where she was undergoing treatment, a group of individuals receiving treatment and staff member created a craft/sewing group meeting weekly to provide an environment for socialization and activity since being out in public risked their well-being. Cathy enjoyed the teaching she received there and her love of quilting began.
The inspiration for the quilt occured while Cathy attended the Houston Quilt Show in 2001, when she saw a quilt made with thie pattern by the designer Marty Michelle. "I was a beginner quilter then and I loved purple. I didn't finish piecing it until 2023. I lost interest in the quilt until our group was in need of a project for an Opportunity Quilt Raffle so I donated it in 2024."
The quilt top then traveled to Grants Pass, Oregon where other guild members completed the quilt. It was long arm quilted by Grace Anderson, and finished by Carol Dickson also a long arm quilter, and Coreen Berglund.
Cathy has remained cancer free for 28 years continuing her love of quilt making and remains an active member of our guild contributing and attending our annual Quilt Retreats!
